The workshop ‘Monitoraggio fitosanitario e la conservazione di Abies nebrodensis’ of the LIFE4FIR project – Palermo, 28 November 2023

The workshop ‘Monitoraggio fitosanitario e la conservazione di Abies nebrodensis’ (Phytosanitary monitoring and the conservation of Abies nebrodensis) organized by the LIFE4FIR project was held at the Sala Lanza of the Museum System of the University of Palermo (here is the programme).

The event aimed to inform and update administrators, managers of protected areas, professionals, and students about the health status of trees in the natural population, environmental stresses, and the importance of monitoring for the management and adoption of adequate protection measures for the species.

LIFE4FIR at DIDACTA 2023 – Catania, 12-14 October 2023

The Madonie Park Authority attended the stand of the protected areas of the Sicilian Region at DIDACTA, a fair dedicated to the world of education and training. The event provided an opportunity to disseminate the themes addressed by the LIFE4FIR project to an audience that is not specifically scientific but rather more general and specialized in the training of potential scientists of tomorrow.

LIFE4FIR at the 118th Congress of the Italian Botanical Society – Pisa, 13-16 September 2023

The LIFE4FIR Project was presented at the 118th Congress of the Italian Botanical Society through the poster “Propagation techniques of Abies nebrodensis by the side-veneer graft” (Sgadari et al.).

The event provided an excellent opportunity to present the results and best practices of the LIFE4FIR project to researchers and professionals in the field.

LIFE4FIR at the XIV National Congress on Biodiversity – Lecce (Italy), 13-15 September 2023

At the XIV National Congress on Biodiversity held in Lecce from September 13 to 15, researchers from the LIFE4FIR project presented two oral presentations:

The LIFE4FIR Replication Event and Conference ‘Strategie di conservazione di Abies nebrodensis’ – Polizzi Generosa, 18 May 2023

On May 18, 2023, the replication event ‘Strategie di conservazione di Abies nebrodensis’ (here is the program) was held at the premises of the Cristallo cinema, organized by the partners of the LIFE4FIR project.

The day aimed to share experiences and best practices with stakeholders, managers of protected areas, administrators, schools, and local communities.

LIFE4FIR at the “Innovative Woody Plant Cloning” conference of the COPYTREE project – Santiago de Compostela, 17-18 April 2023

On April 17-18, the “Innovative Woody Plant Cloning” conference was held as part of the COPYTREE project (COST Action CA21157 – European Network for Innovative Woody Plant Cloning).

LIFE4FIR was presented to researchers and practitioners through the poster “An innovative protocol to propagate and preserve the threatened Sicilian fir through somatic embryogenesis technique” (Jouini et al.).

Open day organized by the University of Seville – 10 November 2022

On 10 November 2022, the University of Seville organized an open day for students. During the meeting, the technical-scientific issues relating to the conservation of threatened Mediterranean fir trees were addressed, referring to the experience of the LIFE4FIR project.

Replication event in Ronda (Spain) – 7 November 2022

On 7 November 2022, a replication event was held in Ronda (Spain) to promote the LIFE4FIR project and the LIFE programme, in its thirtieth year.

During the event, issues relating to the conservation strategies implemented in the project were addressed, as well as possible solutions to be adopted and applied also to other species of conifers at risk of extinction (here the programme of the event).

The event hosted Roberto Danti, coordinator of the project, Montserrat Arista from the University of Seville (beneficiary of the project) and representatives of Spanish institutions involved in the conservation of biodiversity of Abies pinsapo and other species: Jose López Quintanilla, Regional Coordinator (Junta de Andalucía ) of the Abies pinsapo conservation project; Rafael Haro, Director of the Sierra de las Nieves National Park; Antonio Rivas, Director of the El Castillejo Botanical Garden.

LIFE4FIR at the IV National Congress on Micropropagation – Bari (Italy),12-14 October 2022

Researchers from the LIFE4FIR team participated in the IV National Congress on Micropropagation held in Bari in October 2022. During the event, the oral presentation ‘Biotechnology for biodiversity conservation: an overview of its application for the conservation of the critically endangered Abies nebrodensis (Sicilian fir) in Sicily‘ (Izgu et al.) was delivered.
